Reconstruct it. Providers, pharmacies, and insurers can reissue itemized records going back years, and a reissued statement is just as valid as the original.
A lost receipt usually isn't a lost reimbursement — it's an afternoon of phone calls.
Where to recover records, in order of how easy they are:
Pharmacies. Ask for a prescription payment history. Most chains print a full year on request and many have it in the app.
Insurance portal. Explanation of Benefits archives typically go back several years and show exactly what you owed after coverage.
Provider billing office. Ask for an itemized statement for the date of service. Dental and vision practices are usually quick about this.
Patient portals. MyChart and similar systems keep billing history well past the point where you've forgotten about the visit.
Only after those come up empty is the expense genuinely unrecoverable — and an unsupported reimbursement isn't worth the risk. Take the loss on that one and change the system so it doesn't happen again.
